Words and Images Girls Build World

The 2022 UN Women’s theme underscores the need to recognize gender equality in the context of the climate crisis, while also acknowledging disaster risk reduction as one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. Non-profit organization Girls Build World sees the need to trigger urgent discourse to meet these challenges as reflected in our local built design environment, empowering women to step up in this time of crisis.

Closing Remarks – Ms. Mitzi Jonelle Tan of YACAP

Girls Build World is a non-profit organization of women in the design and built environment practice that aims to bring together women with shared experiences, encouraging opportunities, collaborations, and mentorships. Architecture graduates Mikaela Burbano and Ysa Peñas started GBW back in 2019 after discovering their shared experiences of workplace discrimination due to sexism in a stereotypically male-dominated field. They sought to create a safe space for women to open up about their own stories, as well as give guidance and advice to those struggling with similar problems. A small online group was made, and while the community continues to grow, fueled by its original impetus, it now also strives to engage and expand its purview to include relevant issues women and girls face today. •
