Jorge Yulo and Five ASEAN Studios get INSIDE Shortlist Berths

One more Pinoy studio joins the WAF party with a berth at INSIDE World Festival of Interiors, finally capping off Pinoy representation at an unprecedented nine shortlist appearances. Jorge Yulo Architect and Associates makes it into the Residential – Single Dwelling category with entry La Cabaña de Resureccion. This marks Yulo’s second appearance on the INSIDE shortlist, his first being in 2015 for restaurant entry, Mecha Uma.

Joining Jorge Yulo are five more ASEAN studios making for a modest showing for the region (for comparison, 11 shortlisted ASEAN entries made it to INSIDE 2019) in a shortlist soundly dominated by Chinese projects. INSIDE stalwart and frequent category winner Thailand fields three studios in two categories. For the Restaurant category, Charette Studio‘s verdant Camin Cuisine in Cafe joins PIA Interior Company Limited‘s ship interiors for Sirimahannop. Thailand previously won this category with Hypothesis Co., Ltd’s Vivarium back in 2015.

Thailand is represented with a lone entry in another one of its pet categories, Hotel, with Studio Locomotive‘s Hotel Gahn. Hypothesis Co., Ltd again won this category back in 2017 for Ir-On Hotel in Bangkok. Two Singapore practices make it into the Workplace shortlist with DP Design, who submitted its own headquarters for the prize, and Ministry of Design‘s office interiors for the YTL Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As the World Architecture Festival’s sister event, INSIDE will reconvene alongside it on December 1-3 at the FIL Exhibition Center in Lisbon. A super jury that includes: Nigel Coates, Director, Nigel Coates Studio; Oliver Salway, Founder, Softroom; Vesna Petresin, Visiting Fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London, and previous INSIDE winner Johnny Chiu, Founder, J.C. Architecture, will decide the recipient of the much-coveted World Interior of the Year at the Festival.
